Move, Mount, Shoot!
by: Ken Branham
The proper order is the “KEY”
In wing shooting one must be able to put three verbs in
order to achieve success.
These are: Move, Mount,
and Shoot!
The order in which we make these three happen is of
utmost importance. One should
always begin the
movement of the gun toward the target line
before mounting the gun.
This will ensure that the target doesn’t get ahead of
the gun which will usually result in an unsuccessful effort to chase it
down, acquire the needed lead and then deliver the shot.
Understand that as one is mounting the gun, a upward
motion to the face with the rear hand will only ensure that we dip the
barrel as the bird is speeding along its way! We now have to bring the lead
hand up to the target line. During this time, the bird will most likely have
gotten out in front of our muzzle. Moving
the lead hand toward the target line and then beginning the mount is
essential to
success! Always remember that the key to good wing shooting is matching the
speed of the gun with the speed of the target.
The only consistent way
we can ensure this, is moving toward target line, completing the mount, and
then---all that is left is to SHOOT!
Try mixing up the order and disaster will certainly occur. Be
patient, time management is the key. Make your plan, trust your hands and
eyes. Visually acquire the target, move the muzzle toward flight path,
complete the mount, and shoot when the sight picture is correct!
Good Shooting,
