It’s all about insertion points!

by Ken Branham

Insertion points, where the muzzle meets the target, is a vital part of good wing shooting. This said, we must now learn to incorporate a distinct way of ensuring that our insertion point is always correct. Let’s get started!

 1)   Know where you wish to insert before calling for the target.

 2)   Ensure your “hold point” is correct so the target won’t beat your gun.

 3)   Use good time management from the time you see the target all the way to the follow through.

 4)    As soon as you acquire the target visually, start the gun moving toward the target line with the lead hand.

 5)     As the muzzle is being directed toward the flight line, start moving the back of the gun toward your face. Don’t “think” about the shoulder, the gun will find its resting place there. Trust your hands, they will move to where you are looking. The stronger the focus, the more accurate the move.

With a little practice, you will find the muzzle intercepting the target, on flight line and on speed. This will lead to great success.

Remember: To start late is to finish late! Don’t let the target beat your gun!

Don’t get ahead of yourself, to start out in front too far will create excessive gun speed and cause you to miss ahead. A nice “smooth” DISTINCT move to the target with the lead hand will ENSURE a proper insertion, “on bird speed”! This leads to success.

Good Shooting,
